The Panamanian bulk carrier vessel called Pinguino sank in 1967 in the waters of "Sitio Forte", due to a spark in an electrical circuit on board about 800 meters from the coast. During days of calm sea you can see the debris from the surface. Several diving operators os Grand Island and Angra dos Reis hold diving tours at this place.
The sinking of the Battleship Aquidabã occurred in 1906 in the Jacuecanga's Bay. The Brazilian Navy ship was conducting military exercises when a major explosion occurred. The tragic accident killed 112 people. All of her wreckage is located at 15 feet water depth.
In the year of 1866, according to historical records the small steam ship powered by coal and water wheels sank just after a pirate attack near by Red beach at Grand Island. Her cargo consisted mostly preferred cargoes of pirates.
There is a steam ship that sank just two kilometers after leaving from the port of Angra dos Reis bound for Paraty port.
