There fun in Angra all over the year!
Fita is the most important theater event that takes place in Brazil. And its stage is in Angra dos Reis. The best Brazilian and International theater performaces take place in the two big tents at Anil beach, which have capacity for thousands of spectators. Fita theater is entertainment for all publics: children, teenagers and adults.
In July, families whose ancestors came from Japan, but were born and live in Bananal beach(Ilha Grande) have a great festival to celebrate the arrival of the first Japanese families in Angra 30 years ago. The sea procession on the 1st of January is an authentic Carnival party on the sea. The decorated boats and motorboats make the bay really colorfull, with their sound systems and many different groups from the city happily competing for millions of reais in prizes. The itinerary is from Gipóia Island to Anil Beach. The starting point is at Gipóia Island. You can't miss it!
Carnival, a great popular party, has a special charm in Angra: It's made by the traditional Blocos(carnival groups) such as Reizinho, Nega Maluca, Imprensa, Jaqueira, Carioca, Uns e outros, Ladeira Abaixo, Caravelas, Quarta sem Lei, Piranhas, Fortaleza and other blocos that take the streets and head to the city center, during the Carnival days, sharing happiness, samba, singing irreverent song themes and celebrating the great names of the land.
Fifty days after Whitsun, the Divino Celebration takes place is several parts of Brazil. All city is adorned with white and red little flags to welcome the Menino Imperador (which means " Boy Emperor"). The arrival of Menino Imperador, the dancing, the masses and precessions are the highlights of the celebration.
The traditional Theree King's Day groups of the Angrense folklore start their performances in Angra's communities in December, to comemorate the birth of Jesus, and they will only finish them on the 20th of January, during the Festival That takes place in Abraao(Ilha Grande), in honor to the local Patron Saint, Sao Sebastiao. The folias(a kind of carnaval celebration) are also present also at the Divino Celebration and at Angra's anniversary, on the 6th of January.
Angra's Musicians, actors, clowns, plastic artists and craft men meet every Friday and Saturday evening at Porto Square, at 8 p.m., in the Noites Angrenses Project. A stage is set up, and music concerts, theater plays and art exhibits take place there, attracting large audiences.
To bring art closer to the public, the Fundaçao Cultural (Cultural Foundation) puts up a large circus tent for the project Cultura Itinerante(Intinerant Culture), at the one weekend(Saturday and Sunday) every month, in big neighborhoods. In the circus arena there's always great joy and excitement with the musicals, dancing, theater, capoeira, tambourine, workshops, plastic art exhibits and craft work. The activities are free of charge. They start really early in the morning and only finish in the evening.
Would you like to spend time in the Manha de Domingo na Casa(Sunday morning at the House)? On Sunday mornings and afternoons, on Comercio Street, Angra's downtown gets more exciting with craftmen and plastic artists that put up their stands in front of Casa de Cultura Poeta Brasil dos Reis. Theater plays and book shows are also part of the project.
