According to official history the age off Angra dos Reis is current 509 years. It was discovered on January 06 in 1502 by Portuguese navigator Gonçalo Coelho. The city received this name because it means that it is a small bay or cove that was discovered on 06th of January, which is the date that is celebrated for the three wise men.
Angra dos Reis is one of the oldest cities of Brazil. The mentioned city has passes through several cycles of development and currently has a population of about 150,000 inhabitants. The cities economy revolves around tourism, shipbuilding, fishing, oil terminal, nuclear plants and trade general. Studies by archaeologists indicated that the first inhabitants of Angra dos Reis arrived in the year of 9000 BC and they come from the Patagonia tribe. The Tamoios indians whom habited the Angra dos Reis coast later called the Patagonia tribe "Sambaquis" because they ate seafood and left piles of debris and shells near the to sea. The Portuguese who took hold of this territory enslaved the indians and later brought Africans as well. In the region there was resistance against the European colonization but there are almost no official records. The Indian village called "Tupinambá" of Angra dos Reis, he was one of the top personalities in the struggle against colonization. The past and the present of Angra dos Reis is rich with history.
