Tourist Points of Angra dos Reis

Forte do Leme

At Ponta Leste(East Promontory), in the middle of the forest, you can find the Forte do Leme (Leme fort) ruins. The fort, which hasn't been active since 1950, has two Armstrong cannons that have never been used. The access is through BR 101, by the Petrobrás bifurcation. Continue until the end of Ponta Leste road. Then you can take the trail that will take you to Maciéis beach.


Monumento Aquidabã

The monument is situated on a hill at the Ponta Leste (the east promontory). It's a granite construction, that was made to pay tribute to the fallen in the Aquidaba battleship, which exploded in the Jacuecanga bay. The access is through BR 101, by the Petrobrás bifurcation. The view from there is magnificent: we can see the enormous ocean in a great silence only disturbed by the sound of boats and the waves.


Seminário da Santíssima Trindade da Jacuecanga

The bucolic little church Santíssima Trindade is located there. In the back there are still ruins of the Seminary founded in 1797. Situated in a square surrounded by flowers, in Jacuecanga, this is one of the oldest religious constructions of the neighborhood. The access is through Rodovia BR 101, at Jacuecanga bifurcation.


Convento do Carmo

Carmo Convent building welcomes all the visitors that arrive in Angra, either by sea or by the roads. It's the entrace door to the city historic center. There you will find relics and religious images which are extremely valuable.


Conjunto Arquitetônico

The two-store building is a listen heritage with Portuguese architectural features. It was inaugurated in 1847, and in the past it sheltered families and also served as a post office building. Currently is TurisAngra headquarters. It's situated next to General Osório square, at downtown.


Estação Santa Luzia

Inaugurated by the municipality in 2008, the station is located at the city center, in Santa Pier. It's a very importante construction, created to develop the tourism sector in the city. Its architectural design is modern and it has a pier and many restaurants. There are also modern restroom facilities, underneath the ground floor.

Casa de Cultura Poeta Brasil dos Reis

The Casa de Cultura is the outcome of a long people's fight to have a Cultural Center. The building is the cradle that rocks the artists and see they growing up since 1985, when it started as the first "Casa de Cultura" in Rio de Janeiro State. It has been for 25 year the place where cultural movements in the city take place. The building is at downtown, on Comercio Street.


Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora da Conceição

Known as Igreja da Matriz(the main church), it is situated in the very center of Angra dos Reis, and it can be reached by Comercio Street. It took 125 years to be built. It was inaugurated in 1750, and in 1954 it was listed as heritage by SPHAN. There you will find the city's Patron Saint Nossa Senhora da Conceição.


Igreja da Lapa e Boa Morte

Situated at downtown, on Dr. Bastos Street, this church is the only one that still keeps the original painting of the Main Altar and Good Death retable. The Construction is from 1752. It was listed as heritage in 1954. Nowadays, it shelters the Museu de Arte Sacra de Angra dos Reis( Angra dos Reis Sacred Art Museum). This museum was created in 1992, and it's considered one of the best od its kind in Brazil.


Praça Zumbi dos Palmares (Mercado Redondo e Sobrado Laranjeiras)

They are part of a great architectural set of buildings from centuries ago, situated at downtown, on Arcebispo Santos Street, on the way to São Bento neighborhood. The square and the "round" market have been recently renovated and the Casarao Laranjeiras(a colonial house) is under reconstruction to be ready to shelter on more cultura point in the city.


Centro Cultural e Teatro Theóphilo Massad

The artists in the 80's and the 90's created a popular cultural movement called "Teatro já no galpao da Ovar", claiming for a theater for Angra. In 2000 it was finally inaugurated. In the theater complex there's also an exhibit room, music and audio-visual rooms. It's located at downtown, in São Bento.


Chafariz da Carioca

It's a centenary fountain located in the end of Professor Lima Street, at downtown. It was built in 1842, and there are several legends about it. The water that sprang from it was crystal clear and people in the city used to drink it. Nowadays it is not recommended anymore.


Convento São Bernardino de Sena

The convent São Bernardino de Sena, in Santo Antonio Hill, at downtown, has been built to substitute the old Franciscan convent called "Cachoeira" (which means waterfall). The impressive construction was initiated in 1758. Nowadays only ruins of it can be seen, and it is used as an important cultural point in the city.


Colégio Naval e Museu

Situated in the Culturak Corridor of Contorno Road, the Naval School is a beautiful set of buildings. Its construction was initiated in 1911 and finished in 1914. Its mission is the education and formation of Brazilian Navy officers. The complex of buildings is completely reserved, and is located right between the Atlantic Forest and the sea. It's quite near the city center. A Long walk around the Naval School center, by the Costeirinha, is one of the favorite entertainment options for the local people.


Ermida do Senhor do Bonfim

Most known as "igrejinha do Bonfim", this charming and bucolic church takes over all the attention in the place, and brightens up the small island. The island is facing Bonfim beach, near Gordas beach. The church was built in 1780 by Manoel Francisco Gomes and is one of the classic postcard images of Angra dos Reis.


Igreja da Ribeira

Built in 1772, Ribeira Church, situated at Praia da Ribeira, on Contorno Road, between Vila Velha and Retiro neighborhoods, is a precious plece that needs to be preserved. In the past, this church was a reference to the local people, and from there the great São Pedro (Saint Peter) sea processions used to depart.


Ruínas do Engenho de Bracuhy

These ruins are situated on BR 101 km, in Santa Rita, near the Bracuhy Condominium. They are 15 km away from the Angra's downtown. An Engenho (sugar cane mill) was bult at the place in 1885, with European machinery. This was a central Engenho, used for sugar manufacturing, the most modern at the time, in neoclassic architecture. Nowadays it is an important sightseeing point.


Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário

This church in neoclassic style is situated opposite to the sea, in the village Vila Historica de Mambucaba. It is a precious place that must be preserved. It was inaugurated in !836. It's a construction that's worth being visited. Next to it, there are still houses that were built centuries ago. It can be reached by Rodovia BR 101, by the Vila Historica bifurcation. At the place the church was built, there was once an Indian village that was destroyed by the enemies of Cunhabebe, their tribe leader
